TASKS 1 & 2: RESEARCH PROPOSAL & CRITICAL REVIEW (Weeks 1-7)

1

Module introduction & briefing of all tasks

2

Topic Approval

  • Do more research on the first topic, think about the demographics and compare between the groups. Past vs. present, choose something more current.

  • Find the issue in simpler animations, e.g. cartoons are meant for children but in modern animation, films are getting complicated.

  • More research on the second topic first. Candy crush vs. Genshin?

Research conducted to understand both topics.

3

Task 1 - Research Problem, Question, Objective

  • Both research questions are totally different things.

  • RQ can ask about how the themes have been incorporated into animation films. What has influenced it, etc.

  • Narrow down the number of animated films you want to research on between contemporary and modern animation films/cartoons.

Research questions revised based on feedback received and choices of animation films to review is reduced and recategorized.

4

Task 1 - Research Question

Task 2 - Contents

  • Rather than “purity”, you are talking about the themes of the animation films. Topic statement should be amended.

  • What is your problem statement?

  • Problem statement is not a problem, there should be a problem stated within. What is wrong or the problem that can be seen here. e.g. potentially unhealthy for xx.

  • Find out and clarify the terms using to describe traditional and contemporary

  • Find the reason why you are comparing traditional and modern animations/cartoons.

  • Should animation cartoons be created purely for entertainment - RQ approved.

  • Literature findings should discuss the content, do you agree? If yes, why? Is it contradicting or controversial?

  • Note your feedback on the animation films reviewed. Answer your research question, state why you agree or disagree?

Problem statement revised based on feedback received with a problem existing and its consequences. Feedback on animation film review is taken into careful consideration while conducting my critical review.

5

Task 1 Proposal - Final Review

Task 2 - Critical Review topic focus

  • Describe the situation, consequences of your problem statement, then identify the problem.

  • Only use credible websites that are based on research not just a blog or anyone’s column opinion.

  • Reevaluate whether or not the source of information is acceptable or credible. It has to be based on proper studies.

  • Revise on your research questions and objectives.

Source of information is resourced from credible sources. Research question and objectives revised.

6

Task 2

  • Analysis and findings is what researchers found and does it answer your RQ?

Analysis and findings in Task 2 completed according to advice given.

TASK 3: RESEARCH DESIGN – PRIMARY DATA (Weeks 6-12)

9

Task 3

  • Focus group study is more  ideal, must at least have audios for focus group study.

Further elaboration on the research method and its justification. Additional research conducted to list the framework of the focus group study to be conducted.

10

Research Method

  • Be more specific on what type of themes

  • 3-6 participants in a focus group is too small, there should be at the very least 8 participants but preferably 10.

  • Unrealistic for “students” demographic group to be until 25 because university students usually range from 19-23.

  • Suggest to split it into 2 focus study groups as the other might influence the other demographic group opinion. It is better to gain and compare data with 2 different groups to show a clear difference.

  • Every decision you make must be supported by a reason including the profile and background of focus group study, choice of film, etc.

  • Must state how long each film is reviewed. Explain why the duration of the film is enough.

  • Suggest choosing animation films that relate to your topic where they may feel uncomfortable about the topic.

  • Justification must be systematic. Group it into patterns.

Animation films categorized, sample size increased and divided into 2 demographic groups. Detailed duration and justification of each decisions, methods and information included into the research design.

11

Research Method

  • Reduce the amount of films to review, it is time consuming.

  • Categorize the films into types of themes, e.g. theme 1 - 1-2 films.

Number of films and themes narrowed down into 2 categories.

TASK 4: RESEARCH REFLECTION REPORT & RECORDED PRESENTATION (Weeks 12-14)

13

Presentation Slide Content

  • Categorize the films into tables

  • Quantitative & Qualitative data analysis is a type of analysis, it should be under a correct title/heading

  • Collected data is where all the graphs, charts and information collected through research method

  • Data Analysis is a conclusion of collected data with backed up research. e.g. it can be included that xx is xx because literature reviews statements.

Data collected and data analysis contents reorganized and elaborated based on feedback and directions provided.

14

Presentation Slide - Collected Data & Data Analysis
  • Collected data should be focused more on the responses and can use pie charts in percentage because based on the amount of participants it does not look good visually using the numbers.
  • Data analysis should have a hypothesis or a recap of what you have been presenting the past few slides. Type of analysis should be mentioned and it is better to have each point with elaboration individually.
Points in collected data and data analysis rephrased and reorganized based on feedback.
