Figure 3.13 Sketch #3 - Feedback (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

Based on the feedback received, the poses in Figure 3.11 did not have enough curve in the action and insufficient negative spaces between the arms and legs to exaggerate the expression. A new sketch was done on the 3 poses based on the feedback.

2. Digitization
(a) Curves & Negative Spaces

Figure 3.14 Refined (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

Using the sketch as a guide, the poses of the character is illustrated in Adobe Illustrator.

(b) Consistency in Turn Around Sheet

Figure 3.15 Consistency (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

Mr Kamal mentioned the importance of consistency in the turn around sheet, hence guidelines were added and the heights of each section is adjusted according to the guidelines set.

(c) Eyes and stroke weight

Figure 3.16 Details (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

Based on the feedback, the eyes of the character was not quite visible hence the outline of the facial features is changed to white in color with a thinner stroke. Additionally, each details on the character is carefully refined to achieve a smooth and complete illustration of the character.

Idea 2 : Koa passing through a medieval village in the forest.

Final Idea Choice : Idea 2

Figure 4.4 Sketch - Walking (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

Clear sketch of walking position in Idea #2.

3. Digitization
(a) Guidelines

Figure 4.5 Guidelines - Perspective (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

Rule of thirds applied to composition and additional guidelines included to identify vanishing point. A layer of the sketch with lowered opacity is placed onto the artboard as a reference to create the composition.

(b) Outline

Figure 4.6 Composition Outline (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

Using the references in Figure 4.1 and my sketch, the elements of the composition is drawn out onto the artboard, positioned and resized according to its layer to create depth.

Foreground :    Koa - Character, 2 Trees left & right
Middleground : Village, log, rocks, trees
Background : Cliff, sky, ground

(c) Colors

Figure 4.7 Background Color (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

Gradient effect applied to the sky. The timing of the sky is set to a sun setting with warm tones. The ground is covered with dark green tone and beside its pathway with a lighter tone. Pathway is divided into 3 parts to create the shadow of the pathway getting further.

Figure 4.8 Middleground (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

Overview of midground with colors applied.

Figure 4.9 Foreground (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

Overview of foreground with colors applied.

Figure 4.10 Overview of Composition (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

Overview of composition without character.

Figure 4.11 Position of Character (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

Using the rule of thirds guide, the character is placed on the bottom intersection point on the right of the composition.

Figure 4.12 Character Shadow (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

Once the position of the character is fixed, the shadow of the character is aligned according to the direction of the light.

FEEDBACK
Project 1A : Character Design
Week 5 - 21/10/2024
Specific Feedback :
The clothing of the character overall is important in defining and visually representing the personality of your character. Advised to design the character's clothing in a tight attire as a sleeve and robe so long is difficult to animate, maybe could add in a cape. Facial expression of character is good, overall only changes required on the character's clothing.

Week 6 - 28/10/2024
Specific Feedback :
- eyes color is hard to see - white line around the eye but thinner
- walking - avoid overlapping; spread out the movement (-ve spac) / spread out the arms as well

Figure 4.1 Negative Space in Poses (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

- giving space to the other leg as well - explore different positions / silhouette

Figure 4.2 Silhouette (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

- arm is too straight on joy - bending the arms a bit more

Figure 4.3 Bending Lines (Week 6, 28/10/2024)

Project 1B : Environment Design
Week 7 - 06/11/2024
Specific Feedback :
Idea 1 - Reposition the pathway, placing the character in the foreground tree or along the grid lines look better but overall composition does not have any flow.
Idea 2 - Has more flow and a better composition than Idea 1.

Week 8 - 18/11/2024
General Feedback :
- Position characters on a interesting point according to the rules of third.

Specific Feedback :
- Composition 16:9
- Colorwise does not show what type of composition it is and no depth to composition. Front should be darker and moving deeper into composition should be lighter
- Silhouette should show negative spaces / adding spaces between the buildings to show the building
- Left side doesn't really show what is around the composition
- Play around the sizes of the stone on the ground
- Character can be larger to show it, avoid having the character face away from the character instead should face the character.
- If applying a sunset background, other elements should be in a silhouette. Better to apply a plain blue sky.

REFLECTION
Reflecting on my journey throughout this module was a rewarding and challenging experience. I enjoyed learning new skills as it allowed me to develop new skills set and knowledge as a design student in expanding my capabilities to create in different mediums as well as contributing professionally in the future. I learned the process of 2D animation requires a great deal of patience and understanding of breakdowns and inbetweens developing valuable soft skills such as time management and patience at the same time. Each project and exercise provided me with a new challenge and an opportunity to refine my skills, experiment with new techniques, and develop myself individually and professionally in this field. Overall, this module was a valuable and enriching learning experience.
