Week 1 - Week 3
1. 2D Characters

2. 3D Environment

a. wip/output
sourced texture/models : BlenderKit
(due to time limitation and manpower, several models used throughout animation are sourced online with permission of lecturer to apply into animation)

all references are used as a base guide to build scene with specific details such as texture, colors and layering varied according to the suitability of the scene.

b. wip/output
1. water (scene involved : fire drill training, water transition)

Once all camera positions fixed, the f curve of the animations are smoothen through the graph editor.

Week 7
- according to feedback from our presentation, a hill is added into the scene during the graveyard scene.

EDITING
compilation & transitions of scenes
Week 6
Overall compilation and connecting of scenes with suitable transitions applied to certain parts of the scene such as fade in, fade out, and cut. For a smoother workflow, scenes and pre-comp according to pages of the storyboard to reduce chaos and complication in the timeline and ensure a clean and easy timeline to work with.

Intro
(member assigned : yanling)
To properly introduce the story, a quick and simple intro is put together using existing assets and combining the title of the short animation as an introduction.

Outro
(member assigned : isabel)
To close off the entire animation, a simple outro with the message of the animation is shown on screen and transitioned into credits scene.

Week 7
Wiggle Position Effect
 - applied to scene involving the roof collapsing onto the family to exaggerate more impact and movement of the crash

Figure 1.19 AE - Final Amendments
by Yan Ling

once minor editing is completed across all scenes in the composition, entire sequence is realigned to ensure seamlessly and appropriate transitions throughout.

SFX

Week 6
Sfx such as explosions are layered with 3 different types of impact sfx to create a suitable impct of explosion, blow, hit and etc. Other than that, most of the sfx utilizes fade in, fade out and control of volume from one scene to another to create a seamless transition. Some scenes also applied techniques such as introducing a certain sound first before cutting to the next scene indicating a hint of what is to come.

Week 7
Realignments to updated mp4 and additional sfx added to some scenes.

FEEDBACK
Week 1
  1. Determine our expected output and what we want to achieve at the end of this project in terms of style, story, etc.

  2. Cross check what assets is required to ensure an efficient workflow during animating phase

Figure 3.1 Week 1 Feedback

Week 2
  1. When executing 2D assets, ensure a balance and consistency in 2D styles/drawings in which differences should not be obvious/seen throughout the animation

  2. Conduct some test shots with 3D environment, make sure both mediums are adhering and matches the overall style in animation

Week 3
  1. Same feedback of 2D assets in terms of consistency throughout

  2. Adding more light sources in 3D scenes but overall lighting colors looks good. Explore different lighting colors to support the scene

Week 4
  1. Consistency

  2. VFX fire can try to explore layering different colors of fire to build it. Ensure the fire moves in an inconsistent and unsynchronized order.

  3. 3D Shots approved to proceed with animation.

  4. Test different render methods to minimize rendering time and determine output style of 3D asset and its suitability

Figure 3.2 Week 4 Feedback

Week 5
  1. Slight indifference of style between both animators

  2. VFX approved to proceed with animation

Week 6
  1. 3D asset animation approved to proceed

  2. No major comments on 2D animation and to proceed production until completed

Week 7
  1. 2D animations/style were executed nicely however style is too focused on detailed works with no rationale or compatibility in style in the entire animation

  2. No exploration in camera focal length, dolly-in out, etc

  3. Textures appear too harsh in scene and no composition in terms of layering foreground, midground and background.

REFLECTION

Throughout the progression of this entire project, it was a journey of many challenges of not only pushing myself to refine my skills but also mentally in terms of management and ensuring maximum effective and efficient work flow. Carrying out my responsibilities as a member of this group have allowed me this opportunity to take on challenges to encourage more self-growth to be more proficient in my field of expertise. Apart from the technical aspect of my learning outcome through this project is practicing patience and problem0solving skills to deal with unexpected challenges. It was certainly a bittersweet journey with the entire group working towards a common goal despite the limitations from each individual. One of the main challenges from my perspective is the lack of commitment and intention from the group members to further challenge themselves only maintaining at a level that is only sufficient rather than aiming for an even better outcome to understand our potential. Due to certain unforeseen shortcomings, an improvement or lesson I would take on to not only be a better contributor but also a leader is understanding the capabilities of your team which not only contributes to a better timeline preparation but also setting an expectation and minimize any shortcomings that may effect the outcome of the project. All in all, this was an experience that challenged me and allow myself to become a better person both individually and professionally.
