FEEDBACKS

Week 6 (30/10/2023) General Feedback : When doing text formatting, always look for alignment points and command the space well in order give a stronger impact. Alignment is crucial in layout making. Type expressions needs to look good but meaningful because a good looking type expression may only look good but does not leave a mark to viewers and does not resonate to have an impact. The aim of body text formatting is to achieve an even gray among the text. Specific Feedback : Layout #1 is confusing because it does not present the hierarchy of the information on the layout due to the isolated nature present. Prioritize headlines and take note of how all the hierarchy of information is placed in the layout. Important information such as the headlines should not be on the right because we read from left to read. Command the space you have, it will give a stronger impact from your headlines. Overall text is formatted well and ragging is good. A note in text can be made different but not separate the info from the text. The note can be left aligned as the rest of the text and aligned to the bottom line of the texts.

Week 7 (06/11/2023)
General Feedback :
Understand and know what you are seeing when referencing and expressing onto your design; understand what, where, why you are using it. Not ideal to have justified centered in long text body. Cannot have different line lengths in your body text which may lead to miscommunication; communication happens effectively and precisely, body text must be consistent.

Specific Feedback :
Overall layout is fine.

REFLECTIONS

Experience

In the following week, feedbacks were given to our editorial layout on the text formatting, kerning & tracking, type expression for the headline and the overall layout where I was able to learn and improve on my overall layout and text formatting with the constructive feedbacks given. For Week 7, our final editorial layout for Task 2 is reviewed and feedbacks were given to respective layouts. We were also briefed on out Task 3 exercise where we are required to deconstruct letterforms to understand each detail of the letterforms by putting ourselves in the shoes of the typographers who designed the fonts. It was very interesting to learn each and every details of a letterform by deconstructing it as I was able to learn that even the thickness and thinness of each stoke varies from each other.

Observation

From the feedbacks provided by my lecturer in Week 6, I was able to see improvement in my overall kerning & tracking in comparison to the first exercise on kerning & tracking given. Based on my observation, I begin to have a better understanding in typography than before even though there is still much to learn in typography. However, through every feedback sessions, I was able to learn better and ensure that I am on the right track. Furthermore, I found that deconstructing letterforms has allowed me to see even the slightest of a letterform varies from its strokes, curves and more.

Finding

For Task 2 Editorial Layout, I researched and found many examples of layout that was designed by many good typographers, inspiring and motivating me to create a better work. Through the deconstructing of a letterform, I was able to learn how each letterforms were designed and how it varies from each other from its stroke, curves and more gaining a better understanding of how the fonts were designed.

Based on the list of books given, I have chosen A type primer to proceed with my further reading.

Week 6 - 30/10/2023
Chapter 5 - Columnar Organization
This chapter elaborates on the importance of columns in text formatting as it allows us the maximise the amount of space we have as well as balancing is gray value on a page. It shows the comparison of a 2 columns layout and a 5 columns layout for a 2 columned text where a difference can be seen between the space and gray value of a layout.

Week 7 - 06/11/2023
Chapter 5 - Columnar Organization
Establishing and differentiating the hierarchy of a layout is crucial in ensuring easy readability for readers. This chapter shows the ways and importance of creating a hierarchy for the information in your texts. It also goes deep into the specimens of typefaces, pt size, or more as a reference to ease in their work. Comparing and understanding the outcome of your layout or typeface is also important to determine the correct typeface, fonts, pt size and more.

Chapter 6 - Grid Systems
This chapter shows the importance of a grid system both horizontally and vertically in comparison to columnar organization which only aids in vertical organization only. A grid system also helps in organizing, clarifying and amplifying the meaning of the text as well as creating a good composition within the frame of a piece of paper. Most importantly, it is also crucial for trials and errors in creating creating a system that works bets with your information with consideration of its readability, hierarchy of text and more.

Overall, A type primer 2nd Edition is a book that introduces readers the basics for beginner typographers to learn and improve their skills and knowledge in typography.
