LECTURES

Instructions

Create a self-portrait that should not be a conventional photograph; instead, it should reflect your personality, interests, and imagination in a creative and artistic manner while integrating the challenges from 3 different modules and font created (Typo) must be used in in poster that features your self-portrait (DPI), and you will weave a related motive (IVN) through the font and image. Select a caption, phrase, or quote that complements and enhances the narrative of your self-portrait. The goal is to create an integrated poster that showcases your abilities in each of these areas resulting in a visually compelling and conceptually rich poster. The end result is an integrated poster; size: A4 (2480 pixels x 3508 pixels (print resolution) 595 pixels x 842 pixels (screen resolution).

PROGRESSION

Figure 3.1 Final Project Concept Board (Week 11 - 07/12/2023)

Rationale

The overall sketch of my artwork reflects “me” in general, how I am perceived on the “main” planet whereas the smaller planets are things that actually represents me. The concept of my artwork is a universe of me, things/emotions that surrounds me constantly rotates around me, like how planets rotates around the sun.

The general concept is referenced from one of my favourite story, The Little Prince where the protagonist travels from one planet to another, encountering new acquaintance and learning new things through every adventure. In my artwork, I would like viewers to travel through each planet which represents me, big or small to further understand who I am. The main idea of the planet I will be sitting on is similar to a story “The Little Prince”, where the rose symbolizes something the protagonist is responsible of taking care of the rose which in my artwork symbolizes the responsibilities in my life. As the first thing viewers will see is me at the center of the largest planet among all, it is similar to what occurs in my daily life of how people perceive me as shy and quiet.

For the smaller planets, they represent my hobbies, likes and emotions that I feel is part of me. On the left, the larger planet represents “music” which is a big motivation in my life as it serves as a comfort, a joy, a motivation or even just a “friend” who relates to me through its melody and lyrics. The smaller planet before it is a girl dances ballet where “dance” is somewhere I escape to in my life. The furthest planet at the center symbolizes the chaos and frustration in my life, similarly to an active volcano which could possibly erupt at anytime. The planet with the hourglass that is placed upside down and flowing up instead of flowing downward signifies how I am often stuck in past memories unable to move on. The most right planet represents “games”, which is also something that brings me joy and comfort in my life.

The caption for my artwork is “Camminare sulla linea” which is an Italian phrase of “Walk the Line”. It means being in an unstable position and trying to overcome similarly to someone “walking on a tightrope”). I constantly feel I am walking on a tight rope unable to be who I am worried of not being normal. Therefore, my artwork expresses in a way of how I am perceived and who I actually am in hopes of others to not finalize their conclusion of who I am from just perceiving what is on the outside.

Background - Music, Chaos Planet

Week 14 - 04/01/2024

Figure 3.5 Caption Sketch (Week 14, 04/01/2023)

Redesigning caption in my poster where changes will only be made to the phrase "Camminare" and "Linea". Only the M, N and R will be replaced with the illustration as seen in my sketch. It expresses the original of the word itself which means "walk" in English. Therefore, I have added legs as if it is walking through the letters whereas the word "Linea" is drew in a way where lines are connecting the L and A. It is expressed in a way where the L and A are 2 different person connecting by a stroke into 1 person. It aligns with my rationale of expressing 2 sides of me where you need to walk the line (stroke) to understand a me as a person.

Figure 3.7 Dance Planet Illustration Process 1 (Week 12, 14/12/2023)

Illustrating the silhouette of the dancer and applying suitable colors. I have also used the pathfinder tools to work om the details of the dancer. Figure 3.7 shows a more elaborated explanation of the process of illustrating the dancer.

Figure 3.8 Dance Planet Illustration Process 2 (Week 12, 14/12/2023)

After applying the colors to the dancer, I work on the shadows using the gradient tool. It is then followed by the process of illustrating the planet she will be standing on. Figure 3.8 elaborates more in details on the process of the illustrations.

Figure 3.9 Dance Planet Illustration Process 3 (Week 12, 14/12/2023)

Having the planet (base) illustrated, I work on the ribbons that will be wrapped around the planets but drawing its outline and filling the colors and shadows. Refer Figure 3.9 explains in a more detailed process illustrating the ribbon.

Figure 3.10 Dance Planet Illustration Process 2 (Week 12, 14/12/2023)

Refer to Figure 3.10 for detailed elaboration on applying the final colors of the "dance" planet.

3.3 Time Planet

Figure 3.14 Time Planet Illustration Process 1 (Week 12, 14/12/2023)

Moving on to the illustration of the "hourglass" planet, I begin by creating a circle, applying a gradient color and finished off by applying a sand-like texture. Refer to Figure 3.14 for a detailed elaboration on the process.

Figure 3.15 Time Planet Illustration Process 2 (Week 12, 14/12/2023)

The hourglass is illustrated with guidance of my references and using colors from my color palette. I have also applied gradients to create its shadows and textures to replicate the texture of sand. Refer to Figure 3.15 for a detailed explanation.

3.4 Game Planet

Figure 3.17 Game Planet Illustration Process 1 (Week 12, 14/12/2023)

Similar to other planets, the basic circle shape is created and a color gradient is applied to create some shadow to the planet. Using the pathfinder tool, the circle surrounding it is edited to fit the shape of the "game planet". Refer to Figure 3.17 for a detailed explanation.

Figure 3.18 Game Planet Illustration Process 2 (Week 12, 14/12/2023)

FEEDBACKS

Week 11

Sketch - A lot of things going on in the sketch however idea is doable

Week 12

Sketch - Overall contains a lot of negative space and planets all has similar sizes. Emphasizes on the size differences, ex. which planet do you want to be focused more.

Week 14

Digitized - Overall poster is nice, however need to improve on the caption where Mr Hafiz suggested to research more on expressive typography. Wordings do not need to be equally sized and can move around instead of it being stationary.

Animation - Overall no issue nor any further changes needed.

REFLECTION

Experience

Whilst completing this final project, I got the opportunity to contemplate and learn more about myself in order to express an artwork that reflects my rationale for this project. Although it is not as challenging as illustrating for the first time in Adobe Illustrator, I was able to apply the set of skills learned throughout this module such as gradients, texture and more in order to achieve a desirable outcome of my illustrations. As a beginner artist, I believe I have learned a lot through this project to enhance my skills in using Adobe Illustrator and designing, getting accustomed to using Adobe software.

Observation

Throughout this project, I observed that I was able to carry out this project smoothly with the constructive s provided from Mr Hafiz to improve myself as a designer. Moreover, I noticed that not only by sticking to a set of base colors for the project allows a more consistent artwork but also maintaining a consistent art style between all the compositions in the poster is also important which I have learned through the constructive feedbacks provided.

Findings

Through this project, I was able to gain a more in-depth understanding of designing in general where having an art direction is crucial in designing my work. I was also able to apply the skills and techniques learned throughout this module and enhance my skills from this project. One important point I have learned from this project is having a fixed color theme allows a more consistent work rather than mixing and using random colors in my work. I was able to bear in my mind this point while completing my final project in hopes of achieving a more consistent artwork
