Decisive Moment

Figure 2.1 Final Decisive Moment  (Week 10, 29/11/2023)

Idea + Explanation

Krampus is an urban legend where Krampus, a goat-like demon punishes misbehaved children where St Nicholas rewards obedient and behaved children, the total opposite of what Krampus does.

Act I : The Beginning/Setup

Based on this summary, I intend to the before decisive moment in an illustration that shows the “protagonist” conducting bad deeds by attempting to harm the birds on the nest at a nearby tree using a slingshot.

Act II : The Middle/Confrontation

The following scene will be where both children are currently facing the confrontation each with Krampus and St Nicholas. As mentioned, the behaved children gets rewarded with gifts whereas the misbehaved ones ends up getting punished by being eaten or taken to hell by Krampus. The protagonist who will be Krampus' target, is emphasized by using his point of view to view the illustration. Therefore, the protagonist can be seen being punished by Krampus for being bad.

Act III : The Ending/Resolution

For the resolution/after decisive moment, it will be focusing on the outcome of the protagonist’s actions in attempt to harm the birds. The protagonist is seen tied up and taken away in Krampus’ bags to face the unimaginable consequences. The hands of the protagonist demonstrates its hope of anyone to save him from being taken away by reaching out his hands despite being tied up.

In conclusion, similar to tales children listen often, this interpretation/story shows the meaning of  "One Good Turn Deserves Another". When a good deed is done, you will be rewarded and likewise for people who misbehaves to receive the consequence of their action.

1. Research

Figure 2.2 Research/Reference (Week 10, 29/11/2023 )

Before sketching my digital triptych for the decisive moment, I have did some research on some of the elements related to idea to gain a better understanding of how each is positioned and the general idea of how it would look like in different angles.

2. Sketches
Figure 2.4 Sketch #1 (Week 10, 29/11/2023)

Based of Mr Hafiz feedbacks, the before decisive moment sketch has too many things going on in one panel. It rather looks like a whole aspect to aspect transition itself. Mr hafiz suggests to only have the protagonist hands and the tree in the before panel while maintain the after decisive moment panel to match the point of view angle in the digital triptych.

Final Sketch

3. Digitization
Transition : Subject to Subject
Angle : Point of View (Reference - Framed Ink)

Before Decisive Moment
I intend to the before decisive moment in an illustration that shows the “protagonist” conducting bad deeds by attempting to harm the birds on the nest at a nearby tree using a slingshot.

Figure 2.7 Process - Outline (Week 11, 04/12/2023)

As start to my digitization, I have imported my sketches into illustrator and did a rough outline with my sketches and researched images as a guideline to construct my illustration.

Figure 2.8 Process with description - Shadow (Week 11, 04/12/2023)

After having the outlines for the elements in my illustration, I have applied the desired colors based on my color palettes and attempt to create the shadows onto the objects to achieve a more realistic illustration overall. Figure 2.8 shows the hands and slingshot from my "Before Decisive Moment" panel with detailed description.

Figure 2.9 Process - Shadow (Week 11, 04/11/2023)

For the shadow of the hands, tree and the bird nest, I have duplicated each of the respective elements and changed its color to black to imitate the form of its shadow. Then, using the tools in illustrator I apply the Gaussian Blur effect of 15 radius to the shadows.
Figure 2.10 Process with description - Texture (Week 11, 04/12/2023)

Moving on to the bird nest, I used the grain texture to achieve a more realistic yet simple outcome of texture as shown in Figure 2.10.

Figure 2.12 Process - Textures (Week 11, 04/12/2023)

Using the images in Figure 2.11 , I apply the textures to both the slingshot and tree trunk. Before doing so, I apply a gradient onto both objects to get the shadows of each objects. I duplicate the respective objects and made a clipping mask with the texture images and readjusted its opacity to 40% to allow the base color of the objects to be visible.

After Decisive Moment
For the resolution/after decisive moment, it will be focusing on the outcome of the protagonist’s actions in attempt to harm the birds. The protagonist is seen tied up and taken away in Krampus’ bags to face the unimaginable consequences. The hands of the protagonist demonstrates its hope of anyone to save him from being taken away by reaching out his hands despite being tied up.

Figure 2.16 shows the beginning process for my After Decisive Moment Illustration with detailed descriptions. It shows the process of outlining the shapes through my sketches followed by creating the shadow of Krampus.

Figure 2.17 Process - Strokes (Week 11, 06/12/2023)

After outlining the shapes of the protagonist hands with the references from my research, I have used the pen tools to create the shape for the shadows of the hands. The stroke and the shape is selected and separated using pathfinder tool and its color is readjusted to match the color of the hands.

Figure 2.18 Process with description - Colors & Shading (Week 11, 07/12/2023)

Figure 2.18 shows a images and detailed description of my process on illustrating the rope that ties the hands of the protagonist followed by illustration on the clothing shadow with colors and textures in Figure 2.15 applied.
(Refer to image for detailed description on process)

Figure 2.19 Process - Texture (Week 11, 07/11/2023)

The clothing pieces and Krampus Bag also applies the textured images with the opacity of each elements adjusted. Before making clipping masks for the textures, I duplicate each elements to maintain the original desired color but making the textured elements slightly transparent. The textured images are also carefully sourced according to the colors I want for each part of the illustration based on my color palettes.

FEEDBACKS

Before Decisive Moment sketch has too many things going on which looks like a digital triptych itself, Mr Hafiz suggests to only focus on the hands similarly to Decisive Moment and proceed with the digitization.

REFLECTION

Reflecting on this project, we were given a total of 1 week to complete 2 weeks which have given me time to conduct a thorough research to gain a better understanding of illustrating various arms/hands position or digital triptychs in. Furthermore, I have also learned various transition that can be applied to digital triptych and the importance of continuity in digital triptych as your viewers/readers need to understand the story line or what is happening in the digital triptych through this project. Overall, this project has allowed me to refine my skills in Adobe Illustrator and gain more knowledge in Illustrative Visual Narrative and its basic for a beginner designer like myself.
