REFLECTION
1.What have I learnt in this module?
Through this module, I was able to learn the basic principles in design which will help me further understand design in general and applying these principles when designing. I believe the knowledge gained from this module will allow me to have a strong base of knowledge in design and to be able to apply the principles to create a better design/artwork.
Apart from that, I have learnt how to improve in my time management skills to orgnize and prioritize my responsibilities as a student. During Week 4, I had to go on a trip for another module research which was ongoing for a week. Hence, for that whole week I was not able to attend class and work on my tasks for Design Principles. In order to ensure I was aligned to the timeline assigned by the lecturer, I worked on the respective tasks and reviewed it for feedback the week before I was absent. The following week after the research trip, I catch up on the works I have missed during the class hours and before I work on any other responsibilities I have such as assignments from another module or my club responsibilities.
2. What did I enjoy the most?
What I enjoyed most throughout this module is the process of creating my art. Generally, I paint on smaller scales such as A5 or A6. This time I was able to challenge myself to paint on A4 sizes which was a first for me. My first expectation painting on a large scale was finding difficulty in filling up according to the size of the scale I am working on. As I was working on it, I genuinely enjoyed the process of painting parts by parts, figuring out a suitable shade or what can i do to improve my painting instead of the worries I was having before I started the assignment.
Learning the design principles and its application in design is also one of the things I enjoyed the most throughout module because I enjoy learning new knowledge where I can improve to be a better designer in the future. Additionally, given that I am from a different major during my diploma, I am still quite new to learning design professionally which was able to give me a different perspective on design throughout this module.
3. What did I not enjoy the most?
What I did not enjoy most was maintaining my patience throughout the process of completing my paintings as the amount on the details on some of my paintings is overwhelming. I do not usually paint pictures that consists of a lot of elements which was one of the reason I find the overall process overwhelming. To add on, a larger scale also means it takes more time to complete which resulted in the impatience I felt throughout painting my series of paintings. Despites feeling overwhelmed over these, it has made me grow as a person individually and professionally as a designer by learning and overcome obstacles that may not be enjoyable or difficult.
4. What have I learnt about myself through this module?
Something I have learned about myself through this module is learning about my weakness in trusting myself throughout the process. Personally I am someone who remains my expectation of a final product throughout designing an artwork which makes me fixated on a certain direction in order to achieve that expected outcome. However, the process of painting is completed opposite of that where you could go in any direction to achieve the final outcome. This could be related when I was working on the Batu Caves Painting because at first I was worried about how it would turn out as it did not look as expected during the process of painting the concrete wall. However, I decided to let go all of my expectations to go with the flow and trust the process. As a result, I was quite satisfied with the outcome of it. Therefore, I was able to learn my weakness and overcome this challenge as a beginner designer to trust myself throughout the process of creating my artwork. As important as it is to have a direction as an artist, I strongly believe it is also important to trust the process of it even if the process may not be as expected.
5. What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
What has changed in my learning journey is my perspective of design in applying design principles. After learning the basic design principles, I would usually do a rough analysis on design works I see in my daily lives and how the principles are applied towards it, allowing me to gain a better understanding in design and the principles itself.
Something that has not changed throughout my learning journey is my determination and passion to learn new skills and knowledge as a beginner designer. As I begin to learn more through my field of study, I begin to understand design in a better and more professional perspective as compared to before I started my field of study. Being able to have opportunities to improve myself individually and professionally has always been one of motivation to achieve better in life regardless individually, academically, and more.
6. What could be improved in this module?
Something I believe that could improve in this module is to be given more opportunities or exercises to practice the application of the design principles learned throughout this module. Even though the study materials provided has helps me grasp the definition and understanding the design principles, I believe having more opportunities to use these principles specifically on real life examples compared to only one analysis on one specific artwork would better enhance the understanding in the basic design principles through continuous practices.
