LECTURES
Week 1 - 06/02/2024
• Gestalt theory
- The rule of describing how the human eye views the structure/pattern/logic of a visual element by perceiving a single and united form.
- Consists of 6 principles :
1. Principle of similarity
- perceiving objects with similar characteristics such as color, size, font, shape, texture as one group.
2. Principle of continuity
- theory that our eyes follows a path, lines, curves of a design, preferring to see a continuous flow of visual elements rather than seeing them as separate objects.
3. Principle of closure
- even though shape is not complete, the brain completes/fills the missing elements; preference of seeing a complete shape.
4. Principle of proximity
- belief that we group objects that are close to each other while objects that are unrelated should be spaced/separate apart.
- organizes objects/subjects and gives structure to a layout.
5. Principle of figure-ground
- object perceived as either foreground of background, stands out prominently in the front or recede in the back.
6. Law of symmetry and order
- objects that are symmetrical are more likely to group together & perceived as unified group compared to an asymmetrical objects because alignment and symmetry believed to be attractive.
• Contrast
- Difference between objects in value, creating visual interest, emphasizing a point and expressing the contents of a design.
• Emphasis
- Creating a focal point by directing where the eyes first go through color, shape, and value (dominant elements).
• Balance
- The equal distribution of visual weight causing a whole image to appear balance.
- Divided into 2 categories :
1. Asymmetrical - equally distributed, both sides mirrors
2. Symmetrical - one side may seem visually heavier than the other side
• Repetition
- Creating patterns and interests to form unity and consistency in a design.
• Movement
-The eyes follow a path lead by the movement in, around, and through a composition.
- Can be created through different sizes and placement to show movement.
Week 2 - 13/02/2024
• Harmony & Unity
Harmony
- selection of elements sharing common traits; sense of elements fitting together; same theme, aesthetic style, mood
- monotony without variety
- nothing usually stands out as composition is analogous; overall composition looks harmonious (may have repetition of colors)
Unity
- repetition of particular elements (colors, shapes, materials)
- balance & oneness; creating a theme
Additional : Scale & Proportion
- relates to size
- scale - relation between one object to the other; size and dimension → specific measurement
-
actual vs visual estimation
ex. architecture drawings; scale models
-
specify/illustrate details based on relative sizes of objects
-
can be applied with the intentions of fun (dramatic results & visual interests)
-
- proportion - relationship of >2 elements (parts of an object & other parts of the same object) in an composition, respecting its size, color, quantity, degree, setting ( ratio)
- correct relationships by respecting size/quantity between elements = harmonious and unity
• Symbol
- indicate brands/logo, concepts and value, etiquettes and rules; provide/convey info/sentences/text/whole story
- 2 categories of representations :
- Non-figurative
- Figurative
- visuals
- graphic symbols :-
- pictorial - image related, simplified pictures (useful for educational materials)
- abstract - can look like the symbols they represent but less detail/simplified (MAS airlines - inspired by MY wau, nike logo)
- arbitary - no resemblance of the object they represent; many based on colors and geometrical shapes (hospital sign, share symbol)
• Word and Image
- print or digital; relate to a concept or brand if right image used - suitable and relevant images used
- right words paired with image - deepen meaning; suitable typeface + position = visual hierarchy & balance
- typography = design & arrangement - convey message

UNSDG Goal
Goal 15 : Life on Land
The choice goal among the 17 UNSDG goal as my interest as a citizen of this world alongside my concern for the environment is that Goal 15 : Life on Land that aims protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystem, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss. Due to the factors resulting in the current state of this earth, countless lives on land have suffered life-threatening consequences such as habitat loss, environmental degradations, natural disasters, climate change, impact on food security & nutrition, health of the people worldwide and many other severe issues on global biodiversity and on land. Therefore, conserving and promoting sustainable uses and development is important in ensuring the protection of both the lives of both human and wildlife and restoration of ecosystem.

EXPLANATION
Reason for Choice of Art Work
The reason I chose the Gloucestor Harbor painting is because it relates to my UNSDG goal - Goal 15 : Life on Land. The calmness of this painting is like before the environment is polluted and how every view can be as beautiful as it can be as seen in the painting compared to the current state we see in this generation. Generally, I also admire landscape paintings and the way this painting was portrayed in a rather eerie combination of colors has made me liked this painting even more as the contrast of the pink clouds against the blue sky as if the sunlight is penetrating through the clouds makes it beautiful. Moreover, the way the painting portrays a spatial design between the row boat and the horizon allows me to view more than just a main subject, but the whole view as if I was there at the Gloucester Harbor admiring this landscape view myself. Therefore, I believe this painting by Winslow Homer of Gloucester Harbor also reflects the UNSDG goal - Goal 15 Life on Land through the livelihood and calmness in this painting.

FEEDBACKS
Week 2 - 14/02/2024
Blog : Overall blog is very nicely organized, good use of visual hierarchy and elaborated descriptions. Include additional examples for each principle but do not use the ones provided in the slides. Reason for choice of artwork must relate to the UNSDG goal chosen.
Artwork : Overall painting is harmonious due to its color scheme and repetition can be mention in rhythm.
Week 3 - 21/02/2024
Link all source of images and avoid repeating information between Task 1 and Task 2, other than that all good.
