RECAP : TASK 2
To recap on Task 2, we are required to further analyze the design principles
of our chosen art work to better understand the design principles learned
during lectures and how it is applied. Moreover, we are required to study and
state the description behind the chosen artwork and how it is related to the
UNSDG goal chosen. In Task 2, the design principles applied in the chosen
artwork, placements in the chosen artwork and the relationship between the our
UNSDG goal and chosen artwork should be included in our E-Portfolio.

3 Phases of Visual Analysis :
1. Observation - Look & find what you see in the design
Based on my observation, there are 3 figures in the rowboat where there is 1 rowing and 2 seated on the right
of the boat in the foreground whereas in the background, there are several sailboats on the water and beyond it consists of a strip
of land visible on the horizon along with a sky filled with pink clouds. With warm tones colored ranging from red to pink to blue applied, the setting of the painting is either during a sunrise or sunset.
2. Analysis - Relate to design principles and its effect. How viewers are led throughout the design
To further analyze this painting, I have conducted a thorough analysis on the design principles applied.
Design Principles Applied :
1. Harmony
The red and blue in
the painting shows a harmonious combination of both the sky and red clouds. The overall color scheme of this painting is set in warm tones which
results in the overall harmonious balance of the painting.
2. Balance
The asymmetrical balance achieved in the artwork is balanced between the
rowboat and its background. Additionally, the repetition of sailboats in the background also balanced the overall space in the painting.
3. Emphasis
The size between the small boats and land in the background (Figure 3.2) and the rowboat with the 3 children in the foreground (Figure 3.3) of the image. Therefore, the biggest subject in the foreground being the rowboat with 3 child is the focal point of the overall painting.
Figure 3.2 Background of Painting
Figure 3.3 Foreground of Painting
4. Movement
The action of the child rowing the boat reflecting a moment captured while the boat is moving. Additionally, the repetition of the strokes also shows the movement of the water.
Figure 3.4 Movement - Child rowing boat
Moreover, the movement of seagulls flying in the sky, similarly to the child rowing the boat, the seagulls in midst of flight.
Figure 3.5 Movement - Seagulls Flying in the Sky
5. Rhythm
The spatial depth of this art is contributed by the seagulls in the
distance, carefully calibrating to create a rhythm between the solid
shapes and open spaces, light and shadow. To add on, the rhythm of water created by repetition of painting strokes forming the
pattern of the flow of water.
3. Interpretation - Relate to actual facts of the design, what is its meaning/purpose?
The meaning behind this painting of 3 children in a rowboat at Gloucester Harbor, Massachusetts depicts not only a delightful outing in the summer but also suggesting the presence of huge schooners in the background, possibly the boys' livelihood in the future. Colors in the painting are grounded in an eerie combination of pink and blue glowing with light reflected through the clouds onto the surface of the water. The spatial depth of this art is contributed by the seagulls in the distance, carefully calibrating to create a rhythm between the solid shapes and open spaces, light and shadow. Gloucester Harbor, Massachusetts is actually known to be one of his first few works using watercolors and did not receive positive feedbacks as some critics did not seem to understand his work from their point of view but has still proven popular and enduring (Andrews' American Queen, p. 110. February 12, 1881). However, my perception of this painting rather holds a meaning and and admiration towards this harbor and the activities that goes by this harbor at Massachusetts, capturing the "life" on land. Therefore, this painting relates to this UNSDG goal by admiring the original nature of "life on land". If the world is with no progress nor effort to improve the environment, the future generations would not be able to have the chance to admire and appreciate "life on land" like how I or walks of life in past be able to.
Relation to UNSDG Goal
Goal 15 : Life on Land
The choice goal among the 17 UNSDG goal as my interest as a citizen of
this world alongside my concern for the environment is that Goal 15 : Life
on Land that aims protect, restore and promote sustainable use of
terrestrial ecosystem, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification,
and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss. Due to
the factors resulting in the current state of this earth, countless lives
on land have suffered life-threatening consequences such as habitat loss,
environmental degradations, natural disasters, climate change, impact on
food security & nutrition, health of the people worldwide and many
other severe issues on global biodiversity and on land. Therefore,
conserving and promoting sustainable uses and development is important in
ensuring the protection of both the lives of both human and wildlife and
restoration of ecosystem.

FEEDBACK
Week 3 - 21/02/2024
Avoid mentioning how you feel when writing observations, main point is to state what you see in the artwork. Phase 2 : Analysis needs to show an in depth understanding and explanation on what you analyze from the artwork such as the design principles applied to it.
Week 5 - 06/03/2024
Replace contrast with harmony because there is actually no contrast from the painting. The color scheme is rather harmonious with each other than contrasting. Movement of water can also be seen in the painting. Besides that, overall blog requires no further changes.
