Progression #3
1. Art Direction
Miro Board : https://miro.com/app/board/uXjVIe6b3Y0=/
To incorporate and execute an animation that consists a combination of
2D and 3D techniques applied, research is conducted to explore
existing animations in the industry to carefully choose the art
direction of our project.
Some of the animations we've explored are :
- Spiderverse
- Klaus
- Ultraman Rising
- Puss in Boots : The Last Wish
- Nimona
- Blue Eye Samurai
- Last Wish
After careful consideration considering factors such as our story
theme and message, and the visuals to communicate our story to the
audience, our final choice of art direction is mainly based on Klaus.

Act 1-2 (Cool Tone)
While Miles is battling his trauma and fear from his past, a cool tone
color palette will be used to represent his lowest point as well as a sign
that he has not overcome his trauma.
Act 3 (Warm Tone)
The story structure in act 3 is when Miles overcomes his trauma and fear
where the color palette transitions from cool to warm signifying his
"growth" with a bright and cheerful tone of color.
2. Character Reference

With the feedback received, the character design of the antagonist is
directed towards a "fierce" look rather than it being a "cute"
character.

Using the sketch in Figure 2.33 - Figure 2.35, the base platform is
positioned according to the city map. With further research conducted in
Figure 2.37 to understand the details and differences of architecture in
Manhattan, each buildings are carefully modeled. In future execution stage
of this project, an entire city based on the sketch in Figure 2.36 will be
completely modeled. Hence, in this stage of planning phase, the 3 main
buildings namely, Miles' childhood home, the fire station and the location
of Mission #1 is modeled to test the environment overview with different
lightings and angle. More elements such as street lamps, road, pavement,
and other elements found around the street of Manhattan will also be
modeled during the execution stage.
Figure 2.38 - Figure shows the model of Miles' childhood home, the fire
station and the location of Mission #1 with 2 different lightings
side-by-side with left as the day time lighting and right as the night
time lighting. All images are also shot in front, high angle left and
right and low angle left and right. All models are not entire accurate in
comparison to the sketch but still with sufficient details to distinguish
the architectures of Manhattan.
Figure 2.38 heavily references the neighbourhoods of Manhattan with no
other shops of high rise buildings around. Figure 2.39 is heavily
referenced from Manhattan's Engine 55 fire station whereas Figure 2.40 is
mainly referenced from the apartment buildings around the city that also
surrounds high rise buildings, cafe and other shops.

FEEDBACK
Week 4 - 05/03/2025
- establish the environment by planning out on a map with plants,
buildings and overall surroundings.
- character needs to be more appealing showing his persona, features
explore its personaaracter needs to be more appealing showing his persona, features
explore its persona
- pick out what is there at the location - study the location and its
architecture details and differences
- consider if your animation is serious/cartoonic art? is the art work
practical to work on? what can be done and expressed when executing the
animation and what are the technical aspects of technique combo?
- make use of trial and error stage to explore the best ways among all to
execute your animation
- can consider including an antagonist in the story such as symbols of
fire hopping around as a character.
- refine and improvise story - crucial during planning phase to prep for
execution and thumbnails is important is planning the timeline and
overall outlook of the final animation to see which areas that needs
more work on
- can add opening scenes in thumbnail that includes the story title
- story arc is there but conflict of both external and internal (<)
slides need to improve
Week 5 - 12/03/2025
- character is not working and does not really suit the story theme since
its not a cartoonish type of story
- establish the art direction first before working on other designing task
- look up and research existing characters and incorporate them into your
character design
Week 6 - 19/03/2025
- environment design is good
- look for reference that you can achieve rather than selecting references
that are hard to execute.
- character design needs more work.
REFLECTION
Reflecting my progression while carrying my tasks throughout this module,
it was a learning opportunity for me to refine both my skills in this
field of expertise as well as soft skills that will benefit me in the
future. There were many challenges in terms of communication with some
members due to limitation of language barrier which was challenging to
clearly convey the message and expectation of the project. Hence, it has
allowed me to not only grow as a person individually but also as a person
that works as a team to achieve a common goal. Apart from that, the design
process throughout this project has allowed me to refine and apply the
skills gained in previous semesters to produce a design that is up to the
requirements of this project and the lecturers. Throughout this module,
the guidance of Mr Kamal and Mr Kannan have greatly benefited me in
gaining more knowledge in this field of expertise and prepare me for the
future in this line of work.
